New Moon in Scorpio

NEW MOON – 15 DEGREES SCORPIO

Coming within days of a dreamy Sun-Neptune trine, this particular New Moon holds within it the seeds for a fresh start in matters of the heart, particularly if we allow our better selves to prevail. In fact, with Jupiter about to ingress into home territory shortly for the next 12 months, the potential for meeting the person of your dreams will indeed be strong for some signs. However, this may come at a price – saying sorry, forgiving somebody (or yourself) or simply realizing the psychological toll of your old ways. Read my November New Moon forecast to learn more.

SIGN

November’s New Moon occurs in deep, perceptive and passionate Scorpio and concerns the hidden matters of the heart – what we conceal from others.

It is worth bearing in mind that before the discovery of Pluto, Scorpio was considered to be the nocturnal sign of Mars. In other words, the hidden or more tactical side of the god of war. But also of physical vitality – and of course, Scorpio rules all the taboo or less talked about functions of the human body – from sex to excretion.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign, signalling strong but steady emotions and/or perception. This may be why the sign is known for its laser sharp focus, but also for its obsessiveness.

Perhaps because it is so secretive and mysterious, this sign often gets a bad rap. However, the truth is that although it can have a tendency to lash out, gossip and make trouble, it is also the sign most associated with loyalty, tenacity and profound love – the kind people write about in novels. And with all the magical energy around this week, including a flowing trine between Chiron, Jupiter and the North Node, it is entirely possible that you will experience the healing power of love in a big way at the New Moon.

Over the next two weeks, this New Moon is likely to activate Scorpio-ruled themes such as:

  • Passion, love, sex
  • Persistence, tenacity, the will to overcome problems
  • Taking things to extremes
  • Power, winning, strategizing
  • Change, transformation, reinvention

SABIAN SYMBOL

November’s New Moon takes place in the 16th degree of Scorpio. In contrast to its usual dark and gothic image, this Sabian Symbol points to a more hidden aspect of this sign:

A girl’s face breaking into a smile.

Scorpios are probably better known for their scowls and frowns than their smiles, which can make them seem rather scary. This often means that they suffer from the dual burden of being misunderstood, on one hand, and the curse of being both incredibly sensitive and perceptive at the same time. On top of that, they feel so much and this emotional intensity can sometimes be a little overwhelming for other people who may not share the same depth or range of emotions that Scorpios do.

This lunar sign is therefore not an easy one to be born with (take it from someone who knows!) and so comes at a price: often a need for a lot of personal space as well as moodiness, especially when the deep well of emotions churning beneath the surface are being processed. Perhaps this is why, when they smile, it is like the sun breaking out from behind the clouds. There is nothing more beatific to witness than the discernible shift from sadness to happiness on someone’s face, or the opening up of the heart centre after a period of suffering, and I think this is what this particular symbol is alluding to.

The 16th degree of Scorpio occurs halfway through the sign, which coincides with the final degree – the exit point – of the so-called Via Combusta, or burning way. This describes a region of the zodiac where both the Sun and Moon are traditionally considered to be in fall. Although mysterious, descriptions of it seem to hint at a sort of celestial underworld – similar to the valley of the shadow of death mentioned in the psalms, through which the planets pass in order to work through their shadow stuff.

Passing through it is to come out of a tunnel, from the darkness into the light, figuratively speaking. So one could see this degree as representing an end to suffering – the moment when the clouds part and the sun comes out again after a long period of miserable weather. The smile in the Sabian symbol could therefore also refer to the relief experienced at the end of a long and difficult inner journey. Or perhaps the smile of inner knowing when we suddenly realize the gifts we have acquired as a result of our inner struggles, when we are in love or know something that others don’t, as in the case of the initiate.

The Sabian Oracle offers us a few more ideas on how to contemplate the meaning of this degree:

Keywords: Breaking the ice. Drawing others. Radiating happiness. Facial expressions. Changing one’s expression or demeanor. Facial feedback. Making positive eye contact. Transferring feelings that lift others. Releasing stress, worry and anger. Distances bridged between people. Being face-to-face. Teeth, lips, gums, dimples, eyes. Facial lines. Dental work. Beauty that radiates.

The Caution: False happiness to satisfy others’ needs. Covering up how one’s really feeling through putting on a show of happiness. Lack of sincerity. Rigidity of responses. Sour faces. Feeling sad and lonely. Keeping people on the sidelines and the periphery of one’s life. Grumpy attitudes. Refusal to communicate.

KEY ASPECTS

In contrast to the intensity of last month’s Pluto-lunar aspects, this particular New Moon comes a day after the Sun and Moon make a flowing trine to Neptune in compassionate and sensitive Pisces.

As a result, we can expect a tempering of the spikier and more moody aspects of Scorpio during the lunar phase. Instead, a hidden sweetness, like the smile of a shy or sad girl, has the potential to be revealed. However, there is a caveat: we may need to curb our tendency to judge, self-protect or lash out – some of Scorpio’s key defences when it feels cornered; or have the courage to admit that we may have been wrong about something or somebody.

The reason I say this is because the New Moon Will occur close to the fixed star, Zuben Elgenubi, which has a bit of a mixed heritage. In Mesopotamian star lore, it used to form part of the larger constellation of Scorpio, which included the scales of Libra. Before this constellation was ‘invented’ by the Greeks, it was considered to form part of the claws of the Scorpion.

According to Vivian Robson, this star was known to Arabic astrologers as ‘the Insufficient Price.’ The name points to the need to rectify something that is out of balance (no doubt this is a nod here, not just to the idea of retribution as a sort of ‘getting even’ but also to the Libran scales of fairness and reciprocity). So it’s possible that at this time, you or a loved one may be asked to repay some form of karmic debt, make up for a deficit of something or right a wrong.

To this end, we could give this star-planet combination an alternative interpretation, as outlined by Jamie Partridge:

This star has much to do with justice. Well-aspected, it gives courage to fight for right and generosity to defeated opponents. Eric Morse says “its appearance in better aspect is often just the right moment to repair a relationship and to reconsider an earlier harsh judgment.”

Neptune is also associated with sacrifice, forgiveness and selflessness and so makes a powerful antidote to proud and often defiant Scorpio, who finds it hard to apologize or forgive, or to be the bigger person – unless he or she has transformed from its lower form of a scorpion into that of the phoenix/eagle.

So around this time and over the next 2 weeks, it might be worth stopping to consider whether this may be the case for you. Perhaps feelings of shame, guilt or remorse are clouding what may otherwise be a happy time?

If so, then you will be pleased to know that a grand trine between Jupiter in the final degrees of Scorpio, Chiron in Pisces and the north lunar node in Cancer may offer you a boost of healing energy which could give you the courage to reach out and make things right – either with yourself or someone else.

Neptune in positive aspect to the Moon is usually associated with romance, dreams, poetry and higher expressions of love. So in general, this aspect does point to the realization of a secret desire, heartfelt wish or personal dream (especially with the Sun involved). And when paired with the emotional energy of the Moon, it could signal the start of a new period for matters of the heart – possibly even an encounter between soul mates…Although those don’t always take the form we expect them to – something else worth remembering.

Equally, it could point to a time of intense creativity, spiritual realizations and the honing of intuition or extra-sensory perception, and with Chiron’s influence comes the themes of healing of old emotional, physical or psychological wounds, as well as teaching by example.

The key to unlocking the better expressions of this aspect may therefore involve some form of sacrifice, including the ability to surrender and relinquish control when greater forces (or noble emotions) are at work within us or in situations. Scorpio is quite a controlling sign, so this may take quite a feat on their part to let go and allow events to take their natural course. But this in itself may be part of learning key life lessons during this moon phase.

Sometimes things are just meant to be. If Platonic philosophy is anything to go by, we choose our own Fates before we are born and then forget what we are here to learn. Every now and again, we may get glimpses of this – moments of destiny when events and choices take on an extra dimension or added charge. Now may well be one of those times. How will you choose to make use of this magical water energy over the next two weeks?
